Oh my goodness! I love Magpie, and wish it was in Phx! :) They have absolutely the BEST coffee and pastries I've ever had! Now I know I've probably said that in reviews for other coffee houses, but this time I'm really serious. Magpie uses all organic ingredients from local farms, and all their pastries are made in-house -- and believe me, you can taste how fresh everything is! The only thing that kind of stinks when going to Magpie is that, because everything is made so fresh, once they run out of an item, they're out, so be sure to have a backup plan of what you want to order incase the person in front of you orders what you were going to get (and it's the last piece... which is exactly what happened to me when I wanted the last slice of the deliciously-looking piece of blueberry tart... GRRR!) I ended up ordering an iced honey latte (so yum!), my cousin got the same, and then we ordered blueberry homemade pop tarts (OMG, you HAVE to get one, or two, or three... We did! Lol. You won't be sorry), and I also got the last Blueberry Brioche Roll (be jealous! And yes, I'm obsessed with blueberries!) My aunt ordered the Potato and Leek Soup and absolutely loved it -- it was so rich and creamy, not starchy and floury like cream-based soups are at other places. The location itself is so cute and homey-feeling; it's quite welcoming and feels like you're at grandma's house. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful as well, which adds to the welcoming atmosphere. We sat and chatted for a bit while enjoying our coffee, pastries, and soup, and then before we left, we stood in the long line again (totally worth it!!!) to order another honey latte and some chocolate chip cookies -- we couldn't resist! Wish we could've gone back again, but it was such a short trip to Baton Rouge, we didn't have time. Until next time though...

I have been here several times now, and is seems to be a convenient stop for me whenever I come to Baton Rouge. Parking can be an issue. The server are friendly, and super helpful. I came today just before lunch officially started, and the guy gladly sold me a small white bean salad with an iced green tea. Every time I have been here, they are always so just happy to be working there. Magpie seems to be a very wholesome, healthy food choice option in an area not known for healthy food choices. I look forward to coming back, when in the area.

I tried to love this place, really I did, but there are so many things that make loving this place difficult. Including, but not limited to, - NO parking - NO Splenda (get it's supposed to be organic, but really what ab the rest of us who know that's total BS) - The hours...you're a coffee shop not a bank - The line. Left many times because I'm not standing in a SLOW moving line 20 ppl deep for a coffee. The coffee is really good and this would be my go to coffee shop but there are so many thing that make this place too ridiculously inconvenient. But if you want a great cup of coffee between 11am and 3pm, this is your place, except for Sunday bec they are closed on Sunday (right? What coffee shop is closed on Sundays??)

I had a sweet tooth at 3pm saturday and Magpie cafe came up under yelp for desserts/pastries. Parking in this area can be a bit of a challenge, but we lucked out and found one right by the door. The place is nice and quaint. It's very clean with great customer service. It was busy, even at 3pm on a very hot louisiana saturday. We ordered a slice of the tres leches cake and it was divine, nice and moist without an overbearing milky flavor. We sat outside which was cozy, and definitely not a bad choice since they have a big fan running to keep you cool.

Very nice atmosphere. Coffee and sandwiches are just ok. The atmosphere is the coolest thing about this place. If your a serious coffee drinker, you won't be impressed by this place. Servers were nice.

The cake is very flavorful, and you can tell that it isn't mass-produced. You can even see the vanilla bean seeds in the batter! The buttercream is surprisingly light. I enjoyed the temperature at which the cake was served. It was cool, which was perfect for this warm, beautiful day. I enjoyed my cake on the porch, observing the vine-covered fence and watching the cars go by. I'd definitely recommend that all cake-lovers try this place! You won't be dissatisfied.

Love this nice little spot in the heart of Baton Rouge. Even though there is usually a wait for a table to sit and enjoy your meal and coffee it's defiantly worth it. There coffee is always robust and correct temperature wise, but what makes this place is every changing menu that offeres healthy options for a wide variety of diets. A go to spot for a easy lunch or a much needed cup of coffee.

I have heard so much about Magpie! I stopped by once on a Sunday but they were closed. My boyfriend and I decided to venture here for a lunch date! Magpie is a quaint restaurant known for its local and fresh ingredients . The ambience of this place was like no other that I have experienced in Baton Rouge. They have a daily menu which can be exciting if you visit often. Magpie has that coffeehouse feel in that people are lounging about, getting work done. I felt out of place having food there because it lacks an intimate or private atmosphere. Two hipsters were in one corner typing away on a laptop. A few others were reading and writing and another asked us to plug in his laptop as he plopped down. If you want to experience a private, lunch date conversation, I would suggest eating outside. The limited options at Magpie make ordering very easy. They do, however, have several options to choose from in the beverage and pastry department. I chose the veggie panini and it was delicious! It came loaded with goat cheese which was a nice surprise. You order your food and sit down and they will bring it to you, unless you've placed a to-go order. (I say this because I stood around until someone directed me.) The staff is friendly, the prices are reasonable and the food is good. If you're looking for that indie coffeehouse vibe and clean eats then Magpie is a must.

Amazing and impressive menu, eggs benedict are delicious, the place is crowded but the customer service is very good; a really nice place for brunch or breakfast, mushroom quiche is also delicious and their latte with almond milk is super healthy and marvelous, I also tried the green drinks, it is definitely a place to visit while in Baton Rouge, you do not want to miss it.

Love, love, love this cafe and cannot wait to return. I grew up in the surrounding area and am first of all super impressed with how this area of Baton Rouge has blossomed into a unique restaurant lover strip. First of all the appearance was very casual and cozy. Outdoor seating and plenty indoor with a coffee trip feel. Definitely appropriate with the close proximity to LSU. I would have adored this place in college before I moved to the other side of town. Service was friendly, and food made right in front of you, which is always exciting. I ordered the paleo special, which I had no idea what they event meant. They asked me if I ever tried it, then explained it very well. I decided to be adventurous and get it a whirl. So glad I did! The paleo special of the day was an open faced sandwich with turkey, fig jam, pear, and arugula on a homemade paleo bread. I'm actually posting weeks after I ordered it, and my mouth is still salivating. I must go back there soon, and if they don't have that special, no worries because the menu had lots of delicious options. Definite 5 star review, and I can't wait to return with a friend :-)

Cool little place, very busy to be off the beaten path. Not being from the area I wasn't to sure what university it's near but there was tons of student traffic and a consistent line at the counter. They serve local, organic sandwiches, salads. Juices, coffee, tea and cookies just to name a few. They offer different daily breakfast and lunch specials that appear to consist of a soup, salad and sandwich..all of which are made with fresh, local ingredients. Magpie offers both indoor and outdoor seating as well as free wifi. Their pumpkin latte was the best i've had..puts Starbucks and dunkin donuts to shame. The white bean salad and chicken pannini were tasty as well. Must try the hibiscus iced tea (cold)..yummy. Magpie offers a unique selection of local and organic items that are hard to find anywhere else. The eclectic menu offers things such has homemade pop tarts, paleo quiche and a delicious breakfast casserole. The coffee is special to Magpie is great. Parking can be a bit of hassle and they are not always well prepared for large crowd at a time, so if you see line a expect to wait a little while. But it will be well worth the wait.

I've been here many times but always seem to opt for scones or muffins and a perfect cuppa java for breakfast. This morning I decided to go for the Spinach and Ricotta Quiche and all I can say is, "It is the most perfect Quiche in Baton Rouge". They serve a very generous portion and the crust is so light and flaky it made my taste-buds do a happy dance. Pretty much everything I've ordered from the Magpie Cafe causes this reaction but this crust scored a 10 on the taste-bud dance scale. Every dish I've tried at the Magpie so far was a mouth-watering delight for my senses. To top it off the laid back style of the staff and welcoming atmosphere makes me wanna move in. Just sayin.... great food, comfy chairs and free Wi Fi. Tip: Try to catch them on a Saturday they have the Crawfish Eggs Benedict on the menu. If you order it be prepared for your taste-buds to Zydeco around your mouth. Call on Friday after lunch to see if the tasty Louisiana favorite will be starring on Saturday's menu. Saturdays are popular and parking can be a challenge so plan to get there by noonish or you might miss out.

All the food that I've had (even some of the stuff that I think is a little overpriced/not big enough portions etc) have been good quality, fresh and tasty. This is a cool rustic coffee house/local modern art cafe. I am very fond of their slow dripped dark roast coffee that is served in those cool looking large ceramic coffee cups. Plus free (I had two) refills! Great place to read, studying, and/or work. The cleanliness is decent, and the customer service is pleasant. The establishment appears to attract a well diversified group of educated professionals and college students. I heard the owner really cares about keeping the place up and it shows. For lunch today, I had the Roasted Eggplant Panini with onions, tomatoes, kalamata olives, feta and tzatziki on flatbread served with a side salad for only $7.95. It was terrific! If you need a cup of Joe quickly, keep in mind that the parking situation is not all that great...hopefully that can change in the future.

I've never been the type to go out and eat a lunch by myself but this place was such a cute little cafe that I just had to check it out. My boyfriend and I were in Baton Rouge for about half a day but since he was busy working, I decided to have a day to myself. My first stop was grabbing some brunch and juice before heading to the mall. I looked up reviews on Yelp and decided to check this place out. The cafe itself is very comfy and opening, with good outdoor and indoor seating. There was definitely a coffee shop vibe, a lot of people had their laptops and books out. I really enjoyed their selection of sandwiches, salads, juices and pastries - everything looked so good! I got a panini that came with a side salad and a juice to go with it. The weather was beautiful so I grabbed a small table outside under an umbrella. The panini was delicious, perfectly toasted with great flavors! I also enjoyed the salad and the juice. All the ingredients were fresh and tasted great. Magpie Cafe was such a great way for me to spend some time to myself, eat delicious food and watch Friends on Netflix. Couldn't think of a better way to spend a beautiful afternoon in Baton Rouge!

Super yummy and so cute inside and out! Stupidly, I actually forgot to get some coffee, one of the reasons I wanted to try it so badly. Ah, just one of those days! I did order an open face turkey avocado sandwich which was awesome, especially the homemade bread! It also came with a nice size side salad. We also loved the Quinoa with butternut squash and cranberries and the quiche was so good too! Oh, if only I had gotten a coffee! Oh well, just another reason to return.

Let me say this. Based on taste of the food and coffee and the location, this place is amazing. Several panini choices including a vegetarian option, a salad option, and everything is made fresh for each person. The specials when we came in were the Broccoli Quinoa Salad, the Veggie sandwich, and the Bacon and Brie sandwich - all were GREAT! Unfortunately on my first trip this past weekend, there were some service missteps that made for a not so great overall experience. The counter lady took our order quickly and efficiently, but when it came time to receive our order, the system was a little weird. One of the food runners stood on the back porch outside and called my name three times, but she didn't have any food. She said she was just making sure I was still there and that I hadn't gotten my food. Ok? When she came back out a few minutes later, she had my friend's food but not mine. She had also neglected to give my friend a salad she ordered. After about 10 minutes, she returned with my sandwich. They did bring the salad my friend ordered as soon as we told her they forgot it the first time but the whole situation was just a little odd. I'll definitely be back, but I'm hoping the service is better next time.

4 stars for food, 1 for service. This café uses a lot of fresh less-processed ingredients that are vegan and Paleo friendly. Many of the baked items, if not all, appear baked right in the kitchen back there which is a nice homely touch. If you need an item quickly, go here. In fact, I was contemplating ordering an additional item to bring home, and expressed this verbally, but was quickly told my total. I thought maybe I didn't speak loudly enough, and repeated myself, but was told, "yeah, got it". And, was given my total once more. Therefore, didn't really make the chance to order anything else. Too bad, I normally would order a ton of stuff to take home for my family to try. As I was was waiting for my cappuccino near the entrance, many employees passed by me without any acknowledgement I was visiting. The making of a cappucino is a little lengthy- The guy making it just chatted with other employees and didn't say much of any word, except when he called my name when the order was ready. I would order from here again, but only through Indieplate, delivered to my home, due to lack of friendliness by staff. Otherwise, great items on menu offered for healthy conscious.

Best coffee in Baton Rouge. Quiches are good, but a little pricey. There is always a good selection of baked goods. The only downside of the place being so good, is that during prime business hours the line can be long and service is slow!

The coffee, espresso and tea selections are very good and the variety of beans is unrivaled in Baton Rogue. The pastry and food offerings can be hit or miss depending on day and time. The take away message here is get their early for the best selection because once things are gone they don't reapply during the day. Also I've found based on front end staff things can be a bit off as well. I'm a devotee of the banana cupcake and I've had very different experiences based on placement of the cupcakes. The icing which is wonderfully whipped cream on my last visit was a grainy mess as the cream had separated because it wasn't refrigerated as it had been on previous visits. This was a disappointment on an otherwise lovely visit. If you do happen to get there early try the homemade pop tarts if you are lucky enough to get one still a little warm it will make your day.

This is the best coffeeshop I've been to in Baton Rouge so far! They know what they're doing here as far as the drinks go and use good quality beans. I like that they have a lot of options but also keep it simple where it needs to be. You can get French press, Chemex, or V60 single origins here. They also serve cold brew iced coffee drinks and espresso drinks (6 oz cappuccinos, 12 oz lattes, etc) and hot and iced teas! One thing that I loved was that they sell pre-made juices and dark chocolate bars (two of my favorite things in life)!!! The baristas were really nice too, which is always a good thing!! Molly told me a lot about their menu and about their coffee and juices (thanks Molly!). Finally, the layout is really cool and ideal for studying/working or just talking with some friends. If you're looking for a good coffeeshop here in Baton Rouge, come to Magpie!

I started making Magpie Cafe my go-to place for coffee in the morning a few months back. They turned me on to Intelligentsia coffee, which is fantastic. I usually just get a cafe au lait, to-go, and occasionally a scone or biscuit, which are all very good. Customer service and attention to detail is what I really like about this place. After going and ordering the same coffee multiple times over a couple weeks, the baristas started having my coffee ready before I even placed my order. Not something I expect every time, but it's nice to know that people are paying attention. Keep up the good work!!

This place is great. Great food options, great staff, great coffee, great venue. The staff have been super nice every time I've been here and the venue is almost too clean to be an independent coffee shop... it probably has something to do with them closing earlier than most regular coffee shops. You really just can't go wrong here. I'm sitting here now enjoying my iced americano... yesterday I had an awesome Quinoa salad... I don't think this place can go wrong. And when you compare Magpie to the other places to get coffee in Baton Rouge, it really blows everything else out of the water. It's a genuinely good place. Now if it was in Austin where these types of coffee shops are on every other corner... you're talking between a 3 and 4 star rating... but here in Baton Rouge, it's really your only choice for good coffee in a great coffee shop setting.

This is just a perfect place...when I am there, I do not even feel like I am in Louisiana because it is not your typical place. It is definitely hole in the wall, but not one of those dark and dingy holes that you think bats are gonna come flying out of! Nothing cookie-cutter about it. Even the people that work there seem like they have been trained at San Francisco coffee shop because they just so laid back, not in any kind of rush, etc. Thank you God for giving the person the vision of bringing Magpie Cafe into Baton Rouge!! It is just a breath of fresh air than your typical coffee house! I had some of their delicious coffee in one of they giant coffee cups and one of their breakfast bars! For the location and the cafe layout itself...I give it a 5-stars...very "Central Perk-ish" (for those "Friends" fans out there), but I guess I was expecting them to have hot breakfast offerings...maybe an egg white omelet with fresh veggies. I think Baton Rouge lacks in breakfast places that offer more than a pre-made turkey patty breakfast sandwich and scones. They serve lunch, so my complain is to have a couple "hot" breakfast offerings...nothing fancy. Other than that, I enjoyed the service and the atmosphere! This place is great! We live in Houston but spent the night in Baton Rouge (on our way to Florida for vacation). Before embarking on the second leg of our roadtrip, we needed a place to fuel up on the necessities - coffee and food. We are decidedly urban dwellers that are spoiled with lots of unique and easily accessible options at home. And so I turned to yelp - as soon as I saw this place, I knew we had to try it! Let me start by saying that this place is CUTE! The food behind the counter and menu on the wall gave us the impression we were in for a treat. (And judging by the wait staff and clientele - a healthy one, at that). The line was long (a good sign) but the staff was very efficient at taking care of everyone, while remaining friendly and completely unflustered! We ordered 2 almond milk lattes; I got their open faced paleo half sandwich; boyfriend got their turkey panini & a cinnamon roll for him. I also got a small yogurt parfait & two giant chocolate chip cookies to go for the road. Lattes came out quickly, hot, and with beautiful latte art (which I always appreciate)! I tried a bite of the cinnamon roll - it was tasty, and not completely sinful. My open faced paleo turkey sandwich was yummy - I loved the tomato chutney (surely housemade, and something unique) and I was perfectly satisfied. My boyfriends panini completely wowed me though! It had onion jam and smoked Gouda and I had to ask for an extra bite :x. A few hours into our road trip, I've already eaten the parfait (loves the granola. Perfect sweetness and crunch) - I just wish it was a little bigger! And we have, of course, sampled the chocolate chip cookies. They are huge, moist, and a meal in themselves (seriously, these are paleo???)! I think that the only caveat is that we found this place to be a little pricey. You, of course, get what you pay for (organic, vegan, paleo high quality ingredients with variety), and it isn't stopping us from hitting this place up again on our way home (Must. Eat. Turkey. Panini. And another cookie)!

Must say that I didn't fully understand the awesomeness of Magpie at first. Magpie was the first place I went to in Baton Rouge and it just felt like another independent cafe, like the ones I frequent in Oakland. My friends who live on BR were so ecstatic, the food is organic, fresh and clearly made with love. After pursuing other menus in BR, I quickly realized how unique Magpie is for the area. If you want to escape fried and processed food while eating out, check this place out.

Busy place but worth it. It's chill and semi loud and good ingredients. Guessing their menus changes frequently but had the Benedict special cause they were out of quiche and other things. Glad they were cause this was awesome!. Perfectly done and I also ordered the Gouda grits. Wow too! Just seasoned right and not overly cheesy but still cheesy. Swear like the three little bears it's just right here! Its a toss up but either the best or tied for the best for awesome grits. Had the honey iced latte which was just the right amount of mixes. I see why this place is busy. If everything else they serve is like this then I need to come back. To me the sandwiches don't look that appetizing sitting in the glass window waiting to be grilled but can't judge till I try I guess. Had one of their juices which well is just juice. A little too sweet for me. Too much of the fruits not enough vegetables. Anyways eat great feel great.

I was shocked when a friend took me to eat at this small little hole in the wall cafe. I had driven past it so many times and never knew it was there. This is a neat little place to come eat or grab some coffee. It's a small place, but a lot more spacious inside that it looks, and they also have a small outdoor area to sit. Everything they have there is pretty healthy and a lot of gluten-free options. It's fairly cheap and the food is delicious! You should def give this place a shot next time you're in the area and have a little time to kill.

I stopped in at Magpie today for a bit of "coffee and conversation " ( winks to Joni Mitchell.) I say that about the Joni song because this place had a bit of a Bohemian feel. Laid back, a bit rustic perhaps...charming and clean. I had the hibiscus tea, the black tea and sampled a pour over single origin Guatemalan coffee. All were good. I also had a cranberry/orange scone that was great. The pastries are baked in house each morning according to the nice server who took care of our order. I will go back to try a sandwich soon.

This is more a response to the comment on my previous review, rather than an update. My rating remains. I would absolutely understand a dollar charge for extra side SALAD as the case does user good tomatoes and a vinaigrette for that. However, I only asked for extra lettuce, and the person taking the order was fully aware of this. $1 for just a few extra pieces of lettuce is overpriced, no matter the type of lettuce. (I didn't want anything more, especially since I can't have the salad dressing) Also, just a side note for the workers: as a courtesy to customers, please inform them that sandwiches come with a side salad, and that it is already dressed. Not only would that information had negated my need for the extra lettuce , but it would have given me a chance to let you all know in advance to leave the dressing off, rather than have to request it be redone. As before, 3 stars because the food is good and the patio is cute. Do wish they had more truly healthy options (I don't care how good the quality of ingredients is, no cheese nor ciabatta bread is "healthy" and most salad dressings really aren't either)

Coffee was descent. They serve cold brew huge plus in my book. While in Baton Rogue, magpie was the only "real" coffee shop I came across. Not to say there's not others, I'm sure there are. Customer service is uniquely odd, I've been coming across a lot of coffee shops where "poor" customer service is the new customer service?!?! Either way magpie is where I'll be coming next time I'm in the Rogue-they also appear to have a little slew of foods and juices that look heathy and tasty.

I agree with other yelpers. The menu is limited but it seems they've perfected the menu items. This place is always packed with college students and hipsters. It reminds me of the south congress area in Austin (as some refer to as SoCo). I like it a lot!

This is the only coffee place I would recommend in Baton Rouge. The coffee is excellent, and the pastries are addicting. The staff is knowledgeable about their coffee and very welcoming. I would highly recommend the cinnamon roll and a latte made with the specialty espresso. Cute, rustic atmosphere with great music taste. Great place to study or read. They also sell artwork from local kids which is very beautiful.

Best coffee in town. I love working here, and the change to lots more small tables has made it easier to find a spot. And the best thing is that I can come early, drink my coffee, and then have a fantastic lunch! I haven't had a bad sandwich yet, and it's obvious that a lot of care is put into the food. That said, I come for the coffee.

This was my go-to coffee shop for doing work for a long time. The food is ALWAYS delicious, including the vegeterian options (and boy do we need more vegetarian options in BR!) The coffee is superb - never tastes burnt or under-roasted like some of the other local places. I love that they support other local businesses and artists. It is very easy to spend too much money there - the foods and drinks are all that tasty - so be forewarned. They have free wifi and I usually manage to snag one of hte comfy chairs. However lately it has been too crowded / services too slow due to volume of people in line, and the music is sometimes too loud. Loudness of music + groups of people makes it (sadly) a less than ideal place for working for me at present, although I am super glad they now are open later in the day (and seems to be less crowded after 5pm though the food options are slim by then). If you want to splurge on a moderately priced non-gmo / organic / maybe vegetarian lunch, you should definitely go here. And try the juices - they are delicious. But the chocolate mousse... that is my FAVORITE when they have it. Definitely worth your try. They are a positive asset to the community for sure.

Magpie is my all time favorite cafe in Baton Rouge. The atmosphere is quaint, and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Their cups of coffee are topped with fresh designs created from cream, such as a leaf. Try their homemade ice cream sandwiches if you get a chance! I ordered one this past summer along with a cup of watermelon juice. Delicious!

Please get a hood!!! This place is a cool place with lots of culture and great lattes, but I came out smelling like I just worked an 8 hour shift at a diner! I only ordered a tea and was in there for 3 minutes at the most and I just can't take the smell of food that's on me. Also, please get bigger cups.

Magpie is the perfect hang out spot for health conscious eaters and cool Baton Rougians! I used to work as a barista in a coffee shop, and the coffee at Magpie's is the BEST quality i have ever tasted. I'm so glad that BAton Rouge has a place where I can find non GMO, locally, organic food. It takes a long time for them to make fresh juice, though. I always look forward to seeing their menu daily, and I drive out of my way and try to make all my business meetings at Magpie's.

I'm a local barista from the Pensacola, FL area, and my experience at Magpie was A+! Loved the rustic feel, super knowledgable and friendly staff, and the product was tasty as can be. I had their espresso and their Costa Rican single origin pour-over. I would absolutely recommend this shop and I think it's by far the best place in Baton Rouge!

Good espresso. Good coffee. This is by far the best coffee experience I've had in Baton Rouge. The people are friendly and the atmosphere is warm and cozy. This is what I look for in a coffee shop. What? Cold pressed juice.... The place just blew me away. I didn't know you could get cold pressed in Baton Rouge. F-in A. To top it all off, the staff is beautiful. I think they pick only attractives..... Hmmm.

A bit pricey and very small drinks (the cappuccino was like 8 ounces). That said the coffee was very good (I had a pour over, my wife had the cappuccino) and the breakfast foods were both interesting and good. My daughters had fresh yogurt (like home made fresh) with berries and granola. Naked goods were very good too. The place is pricey which is what made my wife unpleasantly surprised with the small cappuccino, but I'll stick with the 5 rating because 4 would be too low. Almost forgot, the place is cool inside and the staff were very friendly, including an owner who chatted with me for a bit.

Dear Magpie Cafe, Thank you for bringing good coffee to Baton Rouge, you are much appreciated. My only regret is that you opened up after we moved halfway across the world (and now just a few states away) but I'm forever grateful for a good cuppa when we come back to visit. This place is legit and from what I've heard, pretty much everyone who has been loves it. Their baristas know their stuff and the coffees are far better than the other 2 BR options (Starbucks and CC's.) Plus, the food is good and the atmosphere lends to studying alone or with pals (from what I've seen) or a good catch-up with a friend.

Magpie Cafe serves local, organic, seasonal dishes at great prices and prompt service. They also have an espresso bar and yummy pastries. They are open for breakfast and lunch. I've only been for lunch and I love that their menu is constantly evolving with the seasons. You never get bored! It's really a one-of-a-kind place in Baton Rouge. The only downside is the parking, which is limited. You may have to park a little ways down the street and walk...but it's worth it. Magpie is a worthy stop on the way to work or a comfortable destination for an afternoon of work or study. Whether you are searching for a lighthouse on the rocky coast of otherwise crappy Louisiana coffee offerings (PJ's, CC, et al) or need an escape for a soft chair and a tasty meal, Magpie just might become part of your life. True to form, James has listened to customer feedback and updated Magpie's whole bean offerings with more single origin variety from Portland's Coava Coffee. Coava is one of the more recognizable names in third wave coffee and the attention they devote to their whole bean sourcing and roasting is a welcome companion to Magpie's focus on quality and meticulous preparation. I wish Magpie would dose pour overs a bit heavier, and I also wish they would have somebody zoned to slow bar at peak times so you could count on a consistent result (a V60, like risotto, rewards attentiveness), but these are big labor and resource commitments and therefore easier said than done. The juices, relative newcomers to the menu, are quite good. You can order a fresh one or grab a to-go bottle if you're not staying. Be relieved (if you like putting good stuff in your body) or warned (if you like Sunny D) that these are the very nakedest of juices; you're getting liquid fruits/vegetables in a cup, not sweeteners and fragrances. There's not much better than an ice cold watermelon lime juice from Magpie after mowing the lawn, let me tell you. The usual house-made, fresh scones, muffins, quiches, casseroles, sandwiches, and now pizza (!) are as strong as ever. If you're a homegrown Louisianan expecting to be punched in the face with blackening spices and thick gravies, you'll be disappointed, but if you want a profoundly local, elemental, nourishing meal, Magpie delivers. Also, they're on this Paleo diet tip and offer a bunch of things that are good for all you cavemen out there; Magpie is the only place I know of that caters to that particular diet. The best part of Magpie, though, is the people. James and crew are always friendly and attentive, and the care they put into their work shows in their product, in the cleanliness of the cafe, and in the growing coterie of regular clientele.

I stopped by here because I had a project to work on, and I just wanted to find a comfortable place to get it done. I don't know why, but I assumed it would be a good place for it. Unfortunately, I was wrong. So, while I can't fault them for not getting their atmosphere before I got there, I was disappointed with my cake. My cake was very dry, and that made me sad. Now, it wasn't all bad, I enjoyed my hot chocolate, and the Wi-Fi was free. The atmosphere was really relaxed, and it seems like the kind of place you can just go and hang out for a few hours. Overall, I will probably go back to enjoy a laid-back lunch.

4/5 hiphiphipster but yummy this was a surprise, who would have imagined that once you walk in i would be confused as to whether i was in baton rouge or the mission district of sf. jus sayin. the panini were yummini, the avocado heated up is just scrumptious. i don't really know any other word to describe that. the coffee was alright, things felt a little slow for the lunch rush though, so keep that in mind if you come around then. i was told their baked goods are delicious, but otherwise it's a neat space and will be returning.

This is a great place. We had some of their blueberry bread and zucchini bread as well as pour over coffee and everything was great. Everyone that works there is super nice. It did take a little time to actually get our drinks from the time they ordered and the coffee could have been a little bit stronger but I brew mine stronger than most people. Its a wonderful place and everything was delicious. I will definitely stop here anytime I'm in Baton Rouge.

I ADORE this place. Literally this is my favorite place in Baton Rouge. So what's so great about Magpie? Let's see.. -- Fresh and locally-sourced ingredients - they get their produce and meat from the farmer's market -- Delicious, home-baked pastries - I especially love the pumpkin chocolate chip muffin -- Interesting sandwich combinations - bacon, apple, and havarti? Yes, please. -- Fantastic atmosphere - local artists' work grace the wall, reclaimed wooden accent wall, lots of nice, creative types coming in and working on their laptops, etc. -- Free wifi, lots of outlets - I've camped out here to work on my thesis many a time (too many, actually.. womp womp) -- Great iced mocha, yum The only downsides are their food is pretty pricey (it kind of has to be, but it does mean this is more of a treat than a go-to lunch spot for this poor grad student), and they close pretty early (so not so good for after work or class study sessions).

Sausage egg and cheese that is crusty on the outside and soft and meaty on the inside.... So bad for you but so good. This place seems to have quite a following. The coffee is incredible. The service and atmosphere is nice. The food is good, but not what you would expect. The only eggs are hard boiled eggs. Come here if you want to feel healthy. Don't come here if you are hungover and looking for a nice greasy breakfast.

Last month we were on a cross-country motorcycle trek, me and my twenty-seven year old daughter. While I don't get into navi-systems and all, she enjoyed sitting on the back, yelping possible stops. After an early morning departure from New Orleans, we stopped for our first cup at Magpie Cafe, recommended by Yelp for "local produced" products. I was blessed to find this sweet spot on yelp passing thru on a trip across the country with my dad. The positive reviews and locally-sourced ingredients used to make the food and coffee were what drew me in. Best lattes I've ever had, in any city! The panini are to die for, especially the bacon, brie, basil, & apple or the pear & brie. It gets crowded sometimes but it's manageable. Parking is awful in this area so be prepared to circle the parking lot or walk.

Finally, specialty coffee has arrived to Baton Rouge! I am from the area, but have lived away (Atlanta and DC) for the last ten years, and the worst thing about coming back to town has always been the dearth of good coffee in the area. Magpie Cafe definitely fills the void. They have a high-quality espresso machine, coffee from the Atlanta roaster Batdorf and Bronson, and well-trained, experienced baristas. They also do pour-overs if you're not in an espresso mood. And as if great coffee wasn't enough, the owners also have a passion for local, organic, seasonal food, so almost all their ingredients are from local farmers markets. The people are all super nice and willing to share their stories and passion. Be aware that they close Sunday all day and Monday afternoon.
